Leadership West Yellowhead will develop the region’s next generation of leaders. The Mentor Program is a form of community succession-planning where each class member is matched with a more experienced person in their general field of work. The mentor relationship facilitates the transfer of knowledge, skills, and experience from senior community leaders to the emerging leaders participating in the program.

How does mentoring work?

Mentoring is a planned pairing of a more experienced person with a less experienced person. The goal of the relationship is to help the learner develop through the mentor’s example, support, and assistance. The relationship is structured, with specific objectives established at the outset.

Paying it forward... Why become a mentor?

“Leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders.” - Tom Peters

Mentors often cite the desire to “give back” to their community as a reason for mentoring. Leaders have an important role to play in developing the next generation of leaders.

Leadership West Yellowhead’s Mentor Program offers a way for senior leaders in the region to connect with emerging leaders, and to provide them with support, advice, access, and advocacy.

What is the commitment?

  • Mentor matches will be confirmed by September 2010.
  • Mentoring pairs will meet a minimum of 5 times (in person or by phone) between October 2010 and June 2011.  The ideal meeting frequency is monthly, where possible.
